Hydrant Flushing
The Department of Public Works will begin hydrant flushing on April 22nd. It will take about 4-6 weeks to complete the entire Town.
Hydrant flushing is routine maintenance for a water system and accomplishes the following:
• Improves water quality by removing minerals that have collected in the water mains
• By removing these minerals, the inside diameter of a water main is increased and therefore allows a better flow of water
• A fire hydrant is a mechanical device; operation of a hydrant lubricates internal mechanisms
• Hydrant deficiencies are noted and repaired as necessary to insure each hydrant will perform when needed for an emergency
Hydrant flushing may cause lower water pressure or temporarily discoloring the water during the process. If your water becomes discolored, run your cold tap for about 15 minutes or until the water runs clear.
