Location

Where is Dyer Located

Dyer is located along the Illinois state line in Lake County, Indiana, 15 miles south of Lake Michigan and 30 miles southeast of downtown Chicago. The town covers approximately six square miles. Neighboring communities include Munster, Schererville, St. John, and Highland. U.S. Highway 30 is the main thoroughfare through the town. Dyer is within minutes of I-80/94, I-294, I-90 (the Indiana Toll Road), I-65, and Illinois 394.

Commuter rail service is provided in nearby communities by Metra and the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (South Shore Rail). Within Dyer, Amtrak provides daily service to Chicago and Indianapolis. Freight rail service is provided through town by the Grand Trunk Western (Canadian National), EJ&E, and CSX railroads. Bus service is available to both O'Hare and Midway airports from neighboring Highland.

Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW)

Located 30 miles NNW of Dyer, Midway is the main hub for Southwest Airlines with 250 daily departures to 60 nonstop destinations.

Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)

Located 48 miles NNW of Dyer, O'Hare is the main hub for United Airlines and American Airlines.   It also is the fourth largest international gateway in the US.

Gary/Chicago International Airport (GYY)

Located 17 miles NE of Dyer, Gary/Chicago is a public use airport for municipal aviation and cargo service.

Amtrak

Provides service to Dyer at the Dyer Amtrak Station. The station is served by the Cardinal with service to Chicago Union Station and New York Penn Station via Washington D.C.'s Union Station. On the days that the Cardinal does not run, the Hoosier State connects Indianapolis to Chicago, where connecting trains take passengers to other destinations on the Amtrak system.

South Shore

Provides service to Dyer at the Munster/Dyer South Shore Station. The Monon Corridor is an 8-mile southern extension of the South Shore Line’s main Lakeshore Corridor. This new line connects north Hammond to its final stop at the Munster/Dyer Station. The existing main line will continue to be called the Lakeshore Corridor.
