Donations for the benefit of David Nowaczyks family may be made to the David Nowaczyk Memorail Fund at any BMO Harris Bank or mailed to McKinley Lodge 712, PO Box 92, Schererville, IN 46375. The fund was established by James E. McNabney, Worshipful Master of McKinley Lodge 712 Free and Accepted Masons, Schererville, Indiana. All funds are tax deductible and will be disbursed to David Nowaczyks family. Staff Sergeant David P. Nowaczyk joined the Army in September 2005 and earned several medals for his service including two Bronze Stars, which are awarded for bravery or merit. He was assigned to Fort Carsons 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division and was on his third deployment to Afghanistan. His most recent deployment began March 3, 2012. He previously had been deployed to Afghanistan in 2006 and 2009. Nowaczyk, age 32, died Sunday, April 15, 2012 from injuries suffered in an improvised explosive device attack in Kunar province. He was supporting the U.S. mission in Afghanistan known as Operation Enduring Freedom. As of April 16, 2012, the Department of Defense had recorded 1,812 U.S. military casualties in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, according to the departments website. Sergeant Nowaczyk was a resident of Dyer, Indiana. He was a member of McKinley Lodge 712 and the Orak Shrine of Michigan City, Indiana. He attended Lake Central High School in St. John, where he was a member of the wrestling team.
